Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Sciences website. We are glad that you thought of us and took the time to visit our Department. This part of the College of Veterinary Medicine is one of three Departments in this school. The other two departments are Clinical Sciences and Pathobiology.
Mission
The mission of the Department of Biomedical Sciences (DBS) is to provide pre-clinical veterinary students with a comprehensive and contemporary foundation in biomedical sciences, including gross anatomy, microanatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and toxicology. The department is committed to fostering excellence in teaching, promoting innovative and impactful biomedical research, and providing service that advances the mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine, the University, and the broader community.

Provide students with up-to-date knowledge and integrative understanding in gross anatomy, microanatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and toxicology to prepare them as competent 21st-century veterinarians and biomedical professionals.
To achieve this goal, the department employs diverse and evidence-based instructional approaches, including didactic lectures, hands-on laboratory exercises, computer simulations, classroom response systems (CRS), case-based learning, and individualized or peer-assisted tutoring.
Promote and support the generation of new knowledge in biomedical sciences through active faculty and student research.
To achieve this goal, faculty, graduate, veterinary, and undergraduate students engage in basic and applied research in areas such as cancer biology, drug discovery, reproductive physiology, and regulation of food intake. Faculty seek and secure extramural funding to sustain these efforts and disseminate findings through scientific publications and presentations at national and international forums.
Engage faculty and staff in service that advances the missions of the College of Veterinary Medicine, the University, and the broader community.
To achieve this goal, members of the department actively serve on departmental, college, and university committees, participate in outreach initiatives, and provide constructive input that strengthens institutional governance and community engagement.
